Back-to-School Driving Tips

The last days of summer mean that the kids are heading back to school, but the weather is still nice enough that they’re still out enjoying as much fresh air as possible. At this time of year, it’s a good idea to brush up on some back-to-school driving tips that will help keep everyone safe.

  • Respect school zones and speed limits: During the summer months, it might be easy to forget the need to respect school zone speed limits and rules since you don’t encounter them so much. This September, always slow down in school zones, be patient, and pay attention.
  • Organize a carpool: To reduce vehicle congestion in school drop-off and pick-up areas, organize a carpool with fellow parents. When it’s your turn to drive, respect the school’s drop-off rules, which are in place to keep everyone safe. In general, you should not double park or drop off/pick up kids at a spot where they have to cross traffic to get to the school entrance or to your vehicle.
  • Respect walkers: Do not block crosswalks and always yield to pedestrians. If a crossing guard is present, you should follow their directions.
  • Respect buses: It can be frustrating getting stuck behind a bus if you’re in a hurry, but you should never illegally pass them. If yellow or red school-bus lights are flashing, all traffic must stop. In addition, buses can block your line of vision, so you will want to be extra careful when close to a bus.
