For many car shoppers, safety is a top priority. And, with so much advanced technology, cars are safer than ever. That is why the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) scores individual models on numerous safety attributes to help discerning shopper find the best of the best.

The IIHS has two levels of safety awards: Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+. To earn the Top Safety Pick accolade, a vehicle has to achieve the top Good rating in all crash tests. In addition, it has to earn an Advanced or Superior rating for front crash prevention technology.

Toyota’s Top Safety Picks this year include the Toyota Yaris iA and Avalon.

To earn a Top Safety Pick+ rating, a vehicle also has to achieve a Good or Acceptable rating for its headlights. This year, Toyota brought home five Top Safety Pick+ honors. These models include the Toyota Prius v, Camry, RAV4, Prius, and Corolla.

Ever since the IIHS introduced its Top Safety Pick awards in 2006, Toyota has worked hard to make sure as many of its models are eligible for this award as it can. The Top Safety Pick+ designation was introduced in 2013 to give the best of the best their own category.

Come check out all of these excellent and safe Toyota models today at Hurlbert Toyota.

Thanksgiving is a holiday where families and friends come together for a delicious meal but traveling can be a major hassle. Fortunately, there are several excellent ways to help reduce the hassle and make traveling this Thanksgiving a breeze. Here are some helpful Thanksgiving travel tips from us here at Hurlbert Toyota so you can arrive at your destination with less stress.

Thanksgiving Travel Tips - Epping, New Hampshire holiday season

  • Fly – Flying can be incredibly difficult around Thanksgiving. The day before Thanksgiving is the busiest day of the year. That means it’s important to plan ahead. Book your flight a few weeks in advance and arrive at the airport three or more hours early to ensure you make your flight in time.
  • Drive – Technology has come a long way, which means now is the time to use it for all of your traveling needs. Use navigation systems to plan your route to optimize fuel economy, time, or a balance of both. Most systems can help avoid obstacles like accidents and traffic jams as well.
  • Pack – Whether you plan on flying or driving, pack light. Doing so means there’s less work loading luggage into the car or no baggage fees to pay at the airport. Instead, ship your extra clothes and various other items to your destination by mail.

Toyota Mirai FCV Concept

When Toyota began making plans for the release of the 2016 Toyota Mirai fuel cell car, the company predicted it would only need to allocate 1,000 units for the US market. Instead, the US Toyota Mirai demand is far higher than anticipated, causing some customers to have to sign up for a wait list.

In total, Toyota has received over 1,900 orders for the 2016 Mirai from the US market. However, due to the limited amount of models set aside for the US market, not everyone will be receiving their Mirai on time. The website that had been used to place orders only two months ago is now presenting potential buyers with the opportunity to sign up for a wait list. These wait list consumers will be notified when production is available.

Toyota already announced this past January that the company would need to increase production of the 2016 Mirai in an attempt to scramble to keep up with overwhelming global demand for the fuel cell hybrid. One thing is for sure, global Toyota Mirai demand spells success for the hybrid and for the company as a whole. Learn more about the ground-breaking car at Hurlbert Toyota!

Tire Pressure

When it comes to spending money, many people would rather head out on a road trip than pay bills. While a road trip can have its own headaches, money and maintenance shouldn’t have to be on your mind. By maintaining your car’s proper tire pressure, you don’t have to! We here at Hurlbert Toyota are here to tell you the benefits of maintaining tire pressure!

First and foremost, keeping your tire pressure at the optimal pressure as suggested by the manufacturer can save a lot of wear and tear on your tires. By preserving your tread, you also increase the amount of miles between new sets, which saves a good amount of money over the life of your car.

Proper tire pressure also increases your car’s handling. Whether you’re on wet or dry roads, traction is important and the proper pressure is there to provide the most traction possible. By improving handling, you’ll experience an overall safer drive as you have more control over the vehicle.

When it comes down to saving money at the pump, maintaining the proper tire pressure can result in better gas mileage. Considering fuel efficiency is a selling point, you’ll want to make the most of each fill-up.

Cat in towel

Kitten season is officially upon us, meaning animal shelters across the country are being flooded with tiny furry friends, in addition to the adult population already on hand. This is why June is recognized as Adopt-a-Cat month. If you’ve been considering adding a fuzzy friend to your family, spend some time to find the purrfect new addition.

The American Humane Association offers some great advice when considering adopting a cat. Here are some of their suggestions.

  • Consider adopting two. Cats are very social animals, and with two cats on hand, they will be able to keep each other company. This is especially useful if you work full-time and they are left alone all day.
  • Find a cat with a complimentary personality. Visit with multiple cats and talk with workers at the animal shelter to help you find a cat with a personality that works with yours.
  • Introduce the cat slowly to the family. If you have young children or other pets at home, your new cat will need a few weeks to adjust. Keep them in a secluded area with everything they need and slowly work them into your family unit.

To help you find the ideal kitty, use sites like petfinder.com to search for local cats that are available for adoption. You can even customize the search for adult cats, kittens, and other needs, such as the cat being declawed.

Will you be adding a cuddly, purring addition to your family soon? Send Hurlbert Toyota some pictures if you do!

Toyota Camry

When it comes to safety technology, competition is a very healthy thing. Or as Russ Rader, spokesman for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, puts it in a recent article by the Los Angeles Times, “The automakers are competing on safety and that’s good news for consumers.” His words are a response to Toyota’s decision to offer a bundle of cutting-edge safety features as a low-cost package.

The Toyota Safety Package includes features such as automatic braking and high-beam automation, as well as lane departure alert. Of course the feature that gets the most attention is the automatic braking. Not surprising when you hear why. As the LA Times reports, “Automatic braking systems are cutting damage claims for front-into-rear crashes by about 14%.”

This is how it always goes with new technologies. At first, they are only selectively available as automakers work to get production costs down. Eventually, they become standard. Just looks like this time Toyota has beaten everyone else to the punch.

The Toyota Safety Package will be available for well under a thousand dollars all across the Toyota and Lexus lineup by late 2016.

Toyota Corolla

The Toyota Motor Corp is reportedly looking to expand its manufacturing productions by constructing two new automotive plants in Mexico and China. For the past several years, the car company has focused on developing manufacturing equipment and technological engineering to improve efficiency of existing plants.

However, the demand for production in the U.S. is starting to increase, thus ending a three-year freeze due to economic decline, therefore the company will allegedly invest a total of $1.3 billion after receiving the go-ahead from Toyota President Akio Toyoda. “We are gradually starting to witness the next stage for new plants,” Mr. Toyoda told investors last month. He said the company had to make a “sweeping change” to “make our plants competitive, instead of merely pursuing volume.”

With just over 10 million Toyota units sold in 2014, it is projected that the two new plants will increase Toyota’s production capacity by nearly 300,000 cars. The Mexican plant, most likely to be located in Guanajuato, is projected to produce 200,000 units of the next-generation Corolla, scheduled to arrive in the North American market in 2019. The China plant, to be located in Guangzhou, is estimated to produce 100,000 Yaris subcompacts starting in 2018.

It’s an exciting time with the Toyota plant expansion, so be sure to stay tuned to Hurlbert Toyota for the latest news.

Toyota Mirai

Toyota has big plans for the Mirai Fuel Cell Vehicle, and they just might be on to the next big thing in alternative fuel. As the Mirai takes off in Japan, here in the U.S. we are preparing for the FCV’s debut in just a few short months. Here is what you need to know about the Toyota Mirai Fuel Cell Vehicle before it becomes available right here in the U.S.

  1. It requires no gasoline. FCVs run off of electricity generated by the chemical reaction between hydrogen (held in a pair of high-pressure hydrogen fuel tanks) and oxygen pulled in from outside. That electricity is then sent to the electric motor. The emission is H2O, nothing more than water vapors are released through the tailpipe.
  2. Refueling is fast. Unlike electric cars, which can take hours to charge, hydrogen refueling stations don’t take more than three to five minutes. Another bonus? The car comes with three free years of fuel and maintenance!
  3. It takes no special skills or knowledge to drive. The Mirai is just like gasoline-powered cars in many ways. The first time you sit inside the cockpit, you’ll feel right at ease.
  4. The hydrogen refueling network is expanding. Currently, California offers a fairly extensive network of refueling stations, which is where the Mirai will first be available for sale. That network will undoubtedly expand nationwide thanks to a number of automakers and companies committing to investing in FCV technology.
  5. It offers an extended driving range. The Mirai is expected to earn 60 mpg-equivalent. That means that early adopters in California won’t have to worry about regular commutes – fill ups would be required less-often than in a gasoline car.

2015 Toyota Corolla

Demand for the Toyota Corolla is higher than ever before, meaning production is up at Toyota Mississippi, the company’s main producer of the popular sedan. Because of this high demand, it comes as no surprise that the Blue Springs, Mississippi assembly plant recently announced the production of the 500,000th Toyota Corolla, hitting the 500,000th vehicle milestone faster than any other Toyota plant in the U.S.

“The 500,000th Corolla vehicle is a milestone we’re excited to be celebrating,” said Fred Volf, vice president of manufacturing for Toyota Mississippi. “We are proud to produce the Corolla, and it wouldn’t have been accomplished without the 2,000 dedicated team members who support this operation.”

This milestone is just one of many Toyota Mississippi has achieved since Corolla production started there in 1968. In 2014 alone, the Mississippi assembly plant produced nearly 180,000 Corollas, reflecting the vehicle’s popularity amongst customers. With a combination of modern styling, value, and premium features, the Toyota Corolla is sure to remain one of the top-selling models in its segment.
