Living in New Hampshire, we all know that winter is a harsh and unforgiving time of year. Winter storms can arrive at any time and if you’re not prepared, you can be left cold and stranded on the side of the road. That is why having a winter survival kit in your car is an important part of living in New Hampshire.
To get you started, here is a list of some key materials you need to have in your kit.
- Small snow shovel
- Windshield scraper
- Spare cell phone and charged battery
- Warm blanket
- Extra winter gear (hats, gloves, socks, etc.)
- First aid kit with needed medications
- Emergency flares and reflectors
- High energy snacks like dried fruit, jerky, and energy bars
- Water and/or Gatorade
- Flashlight and extra batteries
If you do happen to find yourself stuck in your car during a storm, the most important thing to remember is to not leave your car. Assess your situation to see if you think you can get yourself back on the road. However, do not over exert yourself trying to dig through the snow as this can make you sweaty and wet clothes won’t help you keep warm. The best thing you can do is to call for help and do what you need to do to stay warm and alive.
