Toyota Camry Pace Car

Toyota and Amy Purdy continued their fruitful and inspiring partnership recently at the Daytona 500, where Purdy, the Paralympic bronze medalist in Para-Snowboard, drove the Toyota Camry Pace Car. Purdy lost her legs to meningitis at age 19, but she’s built an incredible life and legacy for herself since then. She recently appeared in a Toyota Super Bowl commercial narrated by Muhammad Ali reading his incredible “How Great I Am” speech.

Purdy is a thrill-seeker, as made obvious by her Paralympic participation and her competition on “Dancing with the Stars.” However, she had never quite done anything like this. However, Purdy was undaunted by the challenge. “It compares a little bit to what I do,” Purdy said. “I have raced in snowboarding and I race boarder-cross, and we have banked, slalom turns, so I understand line choice.”

In fact, Purdy was a bit disappointed with the restrictions placed upon her as a pace car driver. “I won’t be able to go as fast as I would like to go,” she said. The Camry she drove was a refreshed 2015 model, and it’s the second time the Camry has been the pace car at “The Great American Race.” The Camry has been involved in the race, too, though; Camry drivers have won it five times.
