Thanksgiving is a holiday where families and friends come together for a delicious meal but traveling can be a major hassle. Fortunately, there are several excellent ways to help reduce the hassle and make traveling this Thanksgiving a breeze. Here are some helpful Thanksgiving travel tips from us here at Hurlbert Toyota so you can arrive at your destination with less stress.

Thanksgiving Travel Tips - Epping, New Hampshire holiday season

  • Fly – Flying can be incredibly difficult around Thanksgiving. The day before Thanksgiving is the busiest day of the year. That means it’s important to plan ahead. Book your flight a few weeks in advance and arrive at the airport three or more hours early to ensure you make your flight in time.
  • Drive – Technology has come a long way, which means now is the time to use it for all of your traveling needs. Use navigation systems to plan your route to optimize fuel economy, time, or a balance of both. Most systems can help avoid obstacles like accidents and traffic jams as well.
  • Pack – Whether you plan on flying or driving, pack light. Doing so means there’s less work loading luggage into the car or no baggage fees to pay at the airport. Instead, ship your extra clothes and various other items to your destination by mail.

fall driving safety tips - couple in convertible

Now that it is officially fall, it’s time to consider the unique hazards that the season brings to the roads. It may not be as hazardous as winter, but that doesn’t mean that fall is free from danger.

To prepare yourself for the fall season, check out these fall driving safety tips:

  • Make sure that your vehicle is up to date on oil changes and that any dashboard lights are addressed before the weather starts to dip.
  • Give your tires a good look, evaluating for air pressure, tread, and alignment.
  • In fact, if you live in a particularly snowy area or just want to be extra safe, consider switching to snow tires entirely.
  • Speaking of snow, don’t forget to get an ice scraper handy inside your vehicle. You may also want to keep a shovel available.
  • Any summer supplies you may have, such as swimsuits and flip flops, can certainly be switched out in favor of warm hats and gloves.
  • Lastly, keep a sharper eye out for pedestrians and animals than ever before, especially as dusk approaches, which comes earlier than in the summer.

2016 Toyota Mirai - human waste into fuel - hydrogen powered

When it comes to fuel-efficient technology, it is clear that there’s no path Toyota won’t take. In fact, their new, hydrogen-fuel-powered Toyota Mirai vehicles can even be powered by – believe it or not – human waste.

The automaker is utilizing a wastewater processing plant in Fukuoka Japan to turn what was originally human waste into pure hydrogen, which is one of the cleanest ways to fuel cars. Hydrogen-powered cars do not even produce greenhouse gases.

In the United States today, there are about 30 different hydrogen-fueling stations available across the country, most of which are concentrated in New York and Los Angeles. But if there is one thing that all Americans truly have in common, it’s their ability to produce waste.

Sadly, it doesn’t look like there are currently any plans to turn human waste into fuel for Toyota Mirai cars in the United States, but that could change. What other resource is so plentiful? It just makes logical sense to turn waste into energy whenever possible.

Want to learn more about what technology Toyota is working on? Contact us or just visit us anytime at Hulbert Toyota, where we can show you all the newest Toyota tech, and maybe even take you out on a test drive!

FR-S becomes the Toyota 86

In 2003, Toyota introduced the world to a new brand of car—Scion. The Scion brand was built on simplicity mixed with fun. Models were usually sold in a single trim level, but could be easily customized with aftermarket parts. However, after 13 years, Toyota decided to absorb Scion back into the Toyota brand.

Now, one of the most popular Scion models is making the transition to Toyota. The Scion FR-S will become the Toyota 86 for the 2017 model year. But, it gets more than just a name change. The 86 will have new looks and better performance, but will keep the handling and affordability that has made it a hit with enthusiasts over the years.

Changes for the model

In the form of the Toyota 86, we will see more aggressive styling with a large center intake. The front end also comes with standard LED headlights, daytime running lights, and turn signals. Inside, buyers will find new seating material, a revised steering wheel, and a new “Granlux” material on the instrument panel.

Better performance for the 86 comes through revised shock tuning and a spring rate change. The manual version also has adjusted gear ratios and engine tuning to increase the torque to 156 lb-ft and horsepower to 205.

Here at Hurlbert Toyota, we are excited to welcome the 2017 Toyota 86 to our family.

unique uses for honey - smore's with honey marshmallows

Honey is a delicious, wonderfully sweet, natural food that is a great addition to a cup of tea, bowl of oatmeal, and other foods. But, did you know there are a lot of other ways to use honey? Here are five unique uses for honey for you to try during Honey Month in September.

  1. Sore throat remedy. Instead of taking traditional cough syrup, try a concoction of honey, fresh lemon juice, and hot water to soothe an aching throat. Aside from the soothing effects, honey has natural antibacterial qualities to help boost your immune system.
  2. Baking alternative. Swap out refined sugar for honey. You’ll need less honey to make your dish just as sweet, and you’ll gain its natural antioxidants.
  3. Boost before a workout. Take down a tablespoon of honey before a workout to help boost your performance.
  4. Preserve fruit. Mix one part honey with 10 parts water to create a “honey sauce.” Fill a jar with your favorite summer fruits, add the honey sauce, seal the jar, and open in the winter to enjoy a preserved summer treat.
  5. Make marshmallows. Yes, you can make your own marshmallows. Use this recipe for fluffy goodness sweetened with honey.

What is your favorite way to use honey?

Summer is in full swing. If you’re a parent, this means you are probably spending a lot of time in the car heading from one summertime event to the next. Here are a few summer essentials for your car to make sure your summer rolls smoothly on.

summer essentials for your car

Vehicle Must-haves

  • Sun protection. The summer rays from the sun can be brutal. Keep a stash of sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats in your car to prevent you and the kids from getting burned.
  • Window shade. Nobody likes climbing into a sweltering car after a hot day in the sun. Use a window shade in your front window to block some of the heat and help your car cool off faster.
  • Water bottles. Keep a stash of reusable water bottles in the car to keep everyone hydrated. Add a few cardboard juice boxes in case you can’t find a water fountain.
  • Heat resistant snacks. Kids seem to be perpetually hungry, especially when they’re running around playing all summer. Keep snacks, such as graham crackers, granola bars (without chocolate), nuts, and other foods that won’t melt in your car.
  • Paper towels. You’re going to need to clean up a spill at some point, so be ready by keeping a roll of paper towels in your car.

What are some of your summer essentials that you keep in your car?

There’s no denying that the minivan is the ultimate family hauler, but if you’re looking for the best minivan for your family, take a good look at the Toyota Sienna. Edmunds.com and Parents Magazine recently named the Toyota Sienna as one of the 10 best family cars of the year. The Sienna was also named 2016 Best Minivan.

2016 Toyota Sienna - 2016 best minivan

2016 Toyota Sienna Overview

“The endlessly roomy Sienna stands above its competitors for two reasons: It’s the only one with available all-wheel drive, and the especially user-friendly controls help you stay focused on the road,” Parents Magazine writes.

In addition to its class-exclusive available all-wheel drive, the Sienna will impress you with its available Driver Easy Speak. This reduces the need for drivers to shout all the way to the backseat. There is a microphone located near the driver that conveys the driver’s voice through the speakers in the back.

Another great family friendly feature is the Dual-View Entertainment Center. The 16.4-inch widescreen display can simultaneously display two videos. It is compatible with Blu-Ray and comes with an HDMI input and an SD card reader. The screen can be operated from any seat in the Sienna by using the remote control. It also comes with a pair of wireless headphones.

Toyota Sienna

Most of us are guilty of speeding. It’s easy to do when you are in a hurry and oftentimes, it just becomes a habit. However, it’s a bad habit! Here are a few arguments against speeding on the road.

LOWERS FUEL EFFICIENCY

Although it can be different for each vehicle, most vehicles operate at ideal efficiency somewhere around 55 mph. Travel above that and you are using more fuel and getting less power exponentially. Try lowering your speed for a month and comparing your fuel costs. You may be surprised!

INTERRUPTS TRAFFIC

To be safe, traffic must be predictable. When you speed, you are creating a degree of unpredictability to those around you. People are more likely to change lanes in front of you because they are expecting the traffic around them to be predictable. Why not be responsible and contribute to a safe driving environment?

INCREASES STRESS

Speeding can increase your stress on the road. When you are going faster than everyone else, and traffic is heavy, this means you are having to constantly pass people. Some people are happy to get out of your way. Others may seem clueless. This can create frustration and annoyance. Why not go with the flow, put on the cruise control and relax?

Instead of having a “Let’s get this over with” attitude about your commute, try to enjoy it! Enjoy some peace and quiet or check out new music or listen to a comedy album. You might find that you don’t mind slowing down at all. Hurlbert Toyota wants to promote safe driving from all of our customers!
