New Year's resolutions for your car 2017

The New Year is right around the corner, which means it’s time to decide what your resolutions will be. However, if you’re tired of making the same plans every year and failing every time, we have a few resolutions for your car that we think you’ll be able to keep.

  • Put away the distractions. Decide that 2017 will be the year when you kick your in-car phone habit. Put your phone away and stay focused on your driving. In addition, don’t eat, put on makeup, or try to retrieve dropped items while driving.
  • Think safety first. If you plan to buy a new car in 2017, make safety a top priority. Look at ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA. In addition, Toyota is continually expanding its Safety Sense features into much of the Toyota lineup.
  • Seatbelts for everyone. Make seatbelts mandatory for every passenger in your car, even other adults. And, don’t forget about the family dog, either. Purchase a dog-friendly restraint so they can be safe in the car, too.
  • Learn basic maintenance. Use 2017 to learn how to do basic maintenance, such as changing a tire or changing your oil. You could save yourself a lot of time, frustration, and money once you know how to do it yourself.

What are your resolutions for 2017?

blown engine - summer car preparations

The summer heat is right around the corner and that means any small problems your car has are likely to get bigger. The last thing you want interrupting your summer vacation is a mechanical problem. By starting your car preparations for summer now, you can reduce the risk of a breakdown. Here at Hurlbert Toyota, we have some great tips for summer car preparations.

  • Air Conditioning – The last thing any driver wants is to be stuck in a hot car with no air conditioning. Having your system looked at by a professional could keep you cool all summer long. If you have a newer car, check your owner’s manual to see if you need to change the cabin air filters.
  • Oil – As one of the primary functions of oil is to carry away excess heat produced by the engine, an oil change is highly recommended. Check your owner’s manual to see your vehicle’s maintenance schedule. If you plan on taking long trips, an oil change is a good idea.
  • Windshield Wipers – If your wipers survived winter and made it through the heavy spring rains, now might be a good time to replace them. While summer isn’t notorious for harsh storms, getting caught in the rain is the last thing anyone wants. Replace your windshield wipers and stay safe!
